MY STORY
HOW I BECAME MAMA MEG
My journey with dogs didn’t start with a business plan — it started when I was 6, running around with my very first best friend, a Yellow Lab named Max. Max was the first of many gun dogs in our house, and with an avid hunter for a dad, training sessions were basically part of daily life. By 14, I’d snagged my first job at a local kennel, and I spent my summers working for a family friend who professionally trained dogs — everything from basic obedience, to real-world upland and waterfowl hunting skills, to complex marking, quartering and pattern control manuevers that earned many of his dogs titles in field trials.
Dogs have been a part of my world my whole life. Being around them so much has made understanding them feel easy and fun. I like to say I grew up “speaking dog” and honestly, it’s my favorite language.
But the name Mama Meg? That started in a little house with two girls and two dogs.
The first dog that was truly mine was Hawk — a sweet, stubborn boy with a considerable resource-guarding issue. With patience, consistency, and a whole lot of unconditional love, we worked through that together. I knew I needed some serious alpha energy … but Hawk taught me that strength means nothing without gentle reassurance and a soft place to land.
Hawk and I moved in with a roommate who decided she wanted a dog of her own. She trusted me to help her find the perfect addition to our little pack. After meeting a few contenders, she fell in love with Storm — an adorable, spirited 3-month-old with ears for days. Somewhere between puppy chaos and training sessions, my roomie dubbed me Storm’s “Mama Meg.” With lots of pet parent pals, our home became the spot for backyard playdates, birthday pawties, and dog park meet-ups. I always enforced defined boundaries with every 4-legged guest and found myself explaining the how’s and why’s to the 2-legged ones. Before long, friends were not only asking me to dog‑sit and troubleshoot naughty behaviors, they were calling me “Mama Meg” too.
Here’s the thing — dogs thrive on clear, consistent leadership. When they understand their place in the pack, they look to you for direction, permission, and guidance. Mama Meg’s was created to bring that maternal-alpha energy, structure, and love to even more doggos (and their humans). Welcome to Mama Meg’s. Welcome to the pack.
